Radio and other stuff
So ...yesterday my 15 mth old desktop tower threw it in. wouldn't turn on.
Techy told me it was power to the main board problem ...$300 and something ...not worth fixing.

He built me in 2 hrs a new customised tower this morning with all the latest mega thingo's and put my old 500gb hard drive in as well. So I have a super computer with 2 hard drives. 1,000gb ... Yahhh

My problems.
#1 .. I can't find my old bookmarks anywhere ... been looking and looking. Are they gone? (firefox)
#2 ... I need a plugin to get the radio going on windows media, but when I hit "install missing plug in"
Aint nothin happnin!

BTW .. Was going to send Acer Computers an email ream out about my near (old) new mini tower lasting 15 mths, but they have NO email address on the website. Surprise!! techie told me the mini desktops are crap and over heat.

Re the bookmarks
I am looking on my old hard drive ...just not sure where I will find them.
Found some really old ones for IE before I started using FF

you need to find your firefox profile, all info is in that!

your welcome, that will keep you busy for the night lol.
Have a good one

P.S. The one you want is places.sqlite, you need to copy that one from your old profile to your new profile.
Note that Firefox needs to be closed whilst doing so so hopefully you've got ie!

Maybe copy and paste all the directions to notepad, and use ie for any further reading!

is it the power box, cause its cheap to replace

He said it was either the power cord itself OR power getting to the main board. Because the power cord  had a silly connection, he didn't have any way of testing it, so I picked it up and took it to Office Works where I bought the computer.  We tried it on a computer there with same connection and the cord worked fine. So the problem had to be getting power to the main board. Of course ... the dearer option!

The place I went to are really great, I get excellent service. I went back at 11am with the verdict and he said if I wanted him to custom a tower for me, he could get it done by 12.30 ... which he did! I didn't need anything but the tower ... my monitor, keyboard mouse modem / everything  is near new ..so rather than pay $600 for a new setup, he suggested I spend that on beefed up ooomph in just the tower.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I fixed my above radio plugin drama, still having problems getting my old bookmarks. I've looked at the muffy's links and tried that. They just don't seem to be there (on my old hard drive) for some reason ... everything else is there.
Bugger Bugger ... Never mind.
Tomorrow is another day ... I'll have another look  with a fresh brain ... if that's possible I'm sure this one's wearing out!
Sorry la-de-da  a power supply doesn't cost $300 especially for a standard PC. If you had a gaming machine then you would be looking at $200+ for a great power supply. You can pick up a decent power supply for $50.00 dollars
Yes do contact Acer and see what they say, I am sure they will try to help
I hope you have not given your old pc to that guy as a trade in? 15 months old makes it better than the pc's I run here.
Probably the easiest way to find your old bookmarks is to use "search" in your start menu.
Otherwise you could try
>go to our old hard drive>Documents and Settings>"your user account, whatever you sign in as">Application Data>Mozilla>Firefox>Profiles> and the Bookmarks file will probably be in a folder that ends with "default"
The last part is a little vague because of different versions of FF and the operating system might file them a bit differently too.
Thanks ripper. I don't think they are there, for some reason
 when I find anything on my old drive that looks like something  ... I get this. This comes up under firefox profile blah blah
Well boag,
I think I'll leave it to the experts.
I've come across quite a few over the last 15 years, MOST people who think they are experts are far from it. I know enough to know when I'm getting the run around. I was getting Trend Micro tech help not long ago and I knew more about it than the tech ... that did me with tech help, why bother? I completely ditched Trend after that ... total lack of confidence in them.
The guys I go to know their stuff and I have complete confidence, I haven't been lead down the path by them yet. I spent quite a bit of time there yesterday waiting for the software to finish loading, I was really impressed with the customer interaction and knowledge freely passed on.
But thanks anyway
Sounds like you found the right file but it should have a heap of links not just the couple you copied and pasted to here.
Boag if it was anything like the last Mini Desktop I opened, I think there's a good chance it wasn't worth fixing.
About 18 months old, the on board sound card had died, it only had one expansion slot and that was being used for a modem, only one RAM slot too. Total garbage. If it had needed a $50 power supply I would've questioned if it was worth spending that on it.
This was a friends system. Very cheap, very nasty.
On the other hand, I agree some PC shops will rip people off if they get the chance.
Ripperspares sorry I think she said it was a desktop tower, that in my books takes a normal power supply and yes they are cheap and take all of 10 minutes to replace and put the cables in. But the mini desktop yes I agree they can be a pain but people like the look of them and they buy them. Just like the old days when you bought the stereo with everything in one. I asked the major question and that was " what happens when the tape player or record player or radio died?" they said it all goes to get repaired. So I purchased a component system with each unit having it's own use. All my mates thought I was nuts until their systems broke down and had to send it all in for repairs.
I agree anything that is compact can be a difficult proposition when it comes to repairs. If you purchase a SFF (small form factor) desktop like HP or Dell (and some other brands) they are designed to be repairable, the same applies to some shuttle cases. The power supplies might cost a little bit more but they do look good and are a compliment to any multimedia setup.
yes it was a mini tower, you must have missed that. It was mentioned further on. It was approx 6cm wide x 24 high and 15 deep.
The guys I took it to told me they won't sell them because of the over heat problems.
I found it interesting that yesterday Office Works didn't have any on display either BUT I bought mine there 15 mths ago, they had a few then.
I missed that right at the start Boag, I just saw "Mini Tower" further on and thought
"Yeah, rubbish".
The best bit in my friends one was the DVD player, even the stick of RAM was substandard, 256mb to run XP on a brand new system.
