Any Interest in a New Uploader for Oztion?

Been looking at the forums and seems like the biggest issue for most people is the actual loading of those ads up to the platform, and not the use of EL to design the ads i.e. people are happy with the rest of EL.

I have been looking for a while at building a front end uploading tool that could take the backup file from EL and change it into an Excel type file (so you can do en-mass editing outside of EL i.e. in Excel, if you want to first) and then upload this directly via the Oztion front end. This would not be a 'fancy' utility and I am not sure just how fast it would be (but faster that a human being for sure).  I will then follow this up next year with perhaps another tool (depending on demand) that will take all Sales/invoices data from the site and export them to a summary Excel file so that the data can be used to produce things like reports, mail labels, reminders, interfaces to accounting packages e.t.c.

It is my intention to extend this software later for uploading/downloading to other auction sites so that you could use the same utility to list to multiple sites and then slowly add functions to it to automate more and more of the auction management requirements, like scheduling, customer relationship management, inventory, (just in time) procurement,shipping/tracking, reporting, e.t.c.

We could even offer customisations to larger sellers for their specific system needs (if required) to integrate this with their existing systems to make Oztion a viable solution (which it may not be currently because its perceived to be just too hard at present to be worth the trouble). This would open up the website to more sellers and hence potentially increase the buyers for this site also (i.e encourage site growth through simplifying its use)... I really feel we need a strong competitor site to eBay and we will need more effective tools to do this.

My only concern is whether there is enough interest in this to make it commercially viable. When I last sold on this site in any quantity back in 2006 there were almost twice as many registered users (many like me moved from eBay when their costs kept skyrocketing). I never loaded more than 400 items on this site as was just too hard to manage back then doing it with EL. If I can get this utility working I may be able to start selling here in quantity again so I have an interest in doing this for my own sake.

If you are a seller regularly listing 100+ items here or elsewhere, please add a line to this forum and let me know if something like this utility is likely to be of assistance to you and if not please let us know what you are using instead.

I would be interested depending on the price of course.

It sounds like a HUGE job!

I run between 1000 and 1500 listings (a little less just at the moment) and use EL with no problems at all.

That's not to say I wouldn't look at another option provided it was approved by Oztion for use with this site and was cost effective (bearing in mind upload fees are about to come in for using EL so I would think they would have to apply to any new program as well).

I'm having difficulty understanding what you mean here, When I last sold on this site in any quantity back in 2006 there were almost twice as many registered users.  The number of registered users has never gone down, it is and has always been steadily rising, so I don't see how there could have been twice as many users in 2006, I've been here from the beginning (Jan 2005) and that has never been the case.

Boo I could be wrong but the way I read it you would still use EL to upload your listings so its not circumventing that, but will be capable of doing a whole lot more.

I use EL all the time, and have never had a problem either creating the listing or with the uploading.  Can't see any reason to 'fix' something which ain't broke.

I have 4000 items over 3 ids and would be interested.

I have had a number of issues with EL uploads the most recent being that it has hung on to descriptions and added them into subsequent listings so that I have one listing correct and then the next 6 or 7 listings have the correct title, category and picture but the description is the same as the first (and irrelevant). Then the 8th or 9th on will have the correct description but is then duplicated to the next items. This has happened before and I was informed that the issue had been resolved but obviously not ... no response to my contact this time (I have asked if the issues will be resolved before the fees come in). I have removed the listings I have found but now I'll need to go through each one and check ...

I am looking for a tool to store descriptions etc for uploading here or elsewhere.

One of the problems I also find here is that if you write up a description in Word, once it's transferred to Oztion often the apostrophes and degree symbols (for e.g.) become question marks ...

I have over 6000 listings and I don't use Express Lister.  I initally used it a couple of years ago but stopped because of the problems with it.  What you are suggesting has merit so please let me know how you progress.

Not sure it will be economical to use - Oztion is intending to charge for EL listings specifically - despite breaching the various Fair Trading Acts. I presume the reason is that it can be used to circumvent their "re-listing fees" after the initial 60 day free period is up. I can't see them allowing another tool to do that same thing and will charge for its use.

Hi cezm,

Regarding the problem of your text changing, how are you transferring the text from Word to OZtion Express Lister? Also can you paste here an example with
apostrophes and degree symbols?

cheers,

imagoscape

Hi All,

Re: brookunga concern over circumventing Oztions "re-listing fees" after the initial 60 day free period is up.

It is certainly not our intent to circumvent any Oztion policies so perhaps someone can explain to me exactly what this comprises.

My own understanding was that if you list your item for a 5 day auction and it fails to sell and you listed the item as 'no relist' then you should be able to resubmit this ad on day 6 as a 'new' listing through the front end with no listing costs.

From my reading of their announcement, their intent is still to offer a free listing option for users of the front end and only charge for automatic relists performed by their own software (either EL or through the auto-relist function on their site), which is fair enough as they are taking the work of retyping the ads out of your hands and performing this on your behalf. We would in no way contravene that by using their software to relist any of the ads. Nor do we particularly require EL at all - we simply offered that as a way to more easily construct the ads before uploading.

They have no problem with you (for example) hiring a person or persons to enter the ads en-masse through their front end as you, and not they, are doing the work of re-submitting the ads.

The proposed changes are seen here:
http://www.oztion.com.au/Community/announcement.aspx
Scroll down to:
"Changes to fees (for sellers)"

There is a free auto re-list for 60 days unless sold earlier - the "No sale no fee" thing. What Oztion has done is to start charging for the re-listing after the 60 days is up - a fee of 6 cents per item if using theiur auto re-list service OR 8 cents if you do it manually.

Becasue EL (and any othe like software) can circumvent this re-listing fee they propose a (illegal) dual pricing structure for listing. The sole reason for that is to prevent re-lising via EL as a "new" listing - which obviously something that has already been listed for 60 days is not.

I can't see Oztion allowing any other software to circumvent this re-listing fee either and it WILL be charged for with their dual pricing policy - unless someone gets Consumer Affairs on their tail first.

Hi imagoscape

Sorry I didn't get back here earlier ... I have been trying to sort out what to do with my other ids before the fee impost.

One of the ads I have at the moment is for golf clubs. I copied the Word text into the editor and it showed correctly as degree symbols in preview ... once it was listed it ended up like this.

Included are:

Taylor Made Titanium 10.5?? Driver

King Cobra 10.5?? Driver 350cc oversize tip

King Cobra 7 Wood 22??

I even had a buyer message me asking if I knew that they were supposed to be degrees!

I haven't gone through to find an example of the apostrophes yet

Not sure exactly what you are after.

Are you trying to have the degree symbol replace the "??" in your listing so it appears something like this:

Included are:

Taylor Made Titanium 10.5° Driver

King Cobra 10.5° Driver 350cc oversize tip

King Cobra 7 Wood 22°

BTW: Taylor Made - should be "Tailor-Made" as in "Custom Made"  (unless you are trying to state that the clubs are made by a person named Taylor)

Hi horizon

I keep putting the correct symbol in but when I come back to the listing it has changed again! ... usually after maintenance ...

The brand is TaylorMade ... so I need to remove the space if I relist ... thanks for pointing that out

Hi cezm,

I suggest that you do the following steps for adding the degrees symbols in your product description :

1. Edit Item
2. Click on Description Builder
3. Click on HTML button
4. Enter °
5. Press Preview Listing button
6. Press Confirm and go back

cheers,

imagoscape

 Hi All,

This thread was set up for sellers like myself with a need for a better bulk listing tool (an alternative to EL). If you have one or are interested in one being developed please reply here.

Can we move the 'off topic issues' to another thread? I think it will become very confusing to any new readers just what this thread is about and your advice will be lost to other sellers who may need it as the topic heading will not match the content.

PS: I hope you have fixed your problem with the symbol translation between these two editors

Thanks,

My apologies graber-bargain  .... my problem with the symbols was one of the reasons I was after a new uploader ... didn't mean for it to take over ...

Hi graber-bargain.
Any time spent on developing a new listing upload tool should not use EL at all.
I mentioned to you on the phone recently that we already have this kind of exact tool already (we developed it a long time ago - was easy) - i.e. a quick/easy system to convert and import a spreadsheet file directly into OZtion's EL program - it works well, and any/all fields are much quicker to edit than the cumbersome method within EL. We can also convert from one site (e.g. ebay) to another using our code, but the problem is that all of this is going to be much less useful soon, once Oztion start charging for listing via EL. The low sales doesn't justify the expense of paying listings fees on all uploads. Also, it's useless for future (full automation) purposes, because it still requires significant human input to operate it, such as run this script/batch-file, which lastly loads EL, then human operates EL to choose import, select file, assign Vshop-categories (sadly this can't be done in the import-file - an unfortunate oversight there), fiddle around in EL with all the excessive confirm boxes, etc.

Did you make any progress on the fully automated lister? i.e. just run a script or program and show it your upload file and off it goes.... (which a program could later use and have full automation)?

Regards,
Ric.

 Hi All,

Firstly cezm, fully understand and most likely this will help you as it does not use its own editor but whichever editor you used to build the file i.e. if you build it on Oztion site and download this working copy to EL then the file EL exports to Excel should be a good template to create other copies of that same working template to use with your other products.

To richbg, yes, quite a bit of progress so far,

We are just getting our system to automatically run EL and export the file for the user. It then strips out the data and runs an upload process (i.e Our program logs in or if user prefers not to log in through us it can attach itself to an existing Internet Explorer Window already signed on to Oztion and then begins uploading items one at a time). It will then check the Selling Listings page to confirm the ones we uploaded were received (have not determined how we will do this for scheduled later items and not sure if they are listed on your selling page before they go live). Any that were not uploaded will be added back to be restarted list if needed.

As explained in my initial post we are not using EL for the upload. Its use is only optional to create the adverts in the first place either on your PC or you can create them on Oztion and then downloaded via EL to your PC. This is because we don’t wish to create yet another PC front end to create ads with or auction monitoring/management system until we determine there is enough demand for it. We use EL export file function just to ensure we have all the fields we need for the upload.

Part 2

We have created functionality to strip out the XML file data so that we can upload it, but we could easily change the code to upload from a template CSV file we could ship with the product.

No Vshop functions at this time as I have not really worried about that side of it for the first cut. It should not be much effort to add this later once I have the normal ads uploading.

Much of the coding effort is around making a robust and restartable process at the moment ensuring good logging of what is being done and ability to restart from a known point if server logs out or times out on their end e.t.c. and having to overcome many issues such as multiple instances of windows logged in and multiple versions of Internet Explorer behaving differently and possible changes Oztion could make that we can rapidly react to via an update to an ini file rather than a re-release of new versions.

Initially we plan to release a low cost/low function version of the code, and then if there is interest, we can increase functionality over time and add any other site people want to be able to upload to (depends on numbers interested in that site of course).

Sorry to all for the delay in my replies but I don’t check my Oztion mail box often as I am not selling anything online at the moment. Once I get this system up and running I will hopefully be signed in more often.

Just to let you all know, most of the Express Lister Export (Backup file creating) and Settings seem to be working fine and the Upload functionality is also getting there fast. We want to include a converter to take the XML file that EL exports and produce a simple CSV file that sellers can 'manipulate' before they upload (currently it just assumes everything in current EL file is to be uploaded).

Still a few more things to get working like conversion of Start time from a "Date/Time +10 hours" (as it is stored in the XLM file that EL exports) to the drop down equivalent of "start in x hours" used on the entry screen and so forth. Our utility is browser independent so should work on any Windows platform that uses IE technology from Windows 2000 and up (but we will have to test this first). Hoping to have something for the community just before Xmas at this stage. It should overcome all the Vista and Seven operating system hassles some people have experienced using EL to do the uploads recently. I am keen to get a Beta out asap.

Let me know what sort of other things you as a community would like it to do and if there is enough interest we can start working on that as time and resources permit.
