Hayfever :(
I didn't start suffering from hayfever until just a few years ago but this year has been the worst. I've moved to a new area and I have never had hayfever this bad. I was taking Telfast but now that seems to not work very well.

I've heard of garlic/horseradish tablets do these really work?
I'm hoping to get something to help soon as I've had days where I refuse to go outside and my young kids do not understand why I can't go out (I've had days where I had trouble breathing it was that bad)

Hi Christina,

I hear you! I first got hayfever when I returned to Australia after my first overseas trip. It always affected my eyes but I discovered Claratyne a few years ago and it was a life saver! However, this past 12 months, my symptoms changed and I've had chronic sinusitis since last Spring. I don't know why this has happened, though a friend has put forward the idea that the weather and lack of rain doesn't help. The Claratyne doesn't do its thing as far as my sinuses go, so my doctor told me to try Zrytec to give my system a change. At my last medical she recommended Becanase spray which, so far, has been great.

I have tried doing the natural thing but you need to be taking the garlic/horseradish for a while before you will notice any change and with the situation I was in (no sleep for 3 nights running at one point a year ago due to breathing difficulties) I needed drugs fast! Also, I found the taste of the herbal tablets pretty hard to swallow!

Aside from the horrible physical ailments, hayfever can be irritating and disrupting. I hope you can find some relief soon, I know exactly how you feel!

Horseradish is worth trying and also honey comb (that is the bees wax with the honey in it) 1 teaspoon a day - wax n all.

Also Google neti pot It is used for irrigating the nasal area. I have heard a lot of people get good relief using one. (Me - I just stand under the shower and breathe in some of the water a bit and that helps)

Spice - same deal!  I was fine growing up in the country, all kinds of plants around, hay carting.....  no problem at all.  Went overseas, came back and hayfever every season and often when its not hayfever season!!

I have tried pretty much every readily available drug on the market with limited success.  The one I have at the moment is a Priceline homebrand one - Fexofenadine or something like that.  Most really bad days I take a double dose to be sure!  But do switch around different drugs until you find one that works for you, don't just stick to the one brand if its not working.

Garlic and horseradish etc  might work on the milder days but watch the weather on the TV news - they often have a pollen count indicator shown which is often a good guide.

Fess saline spray twice a day also helps.

Christina, start inhaling boiling water over a pan and also add some breathe easy to it, you can get that at the health food shop. Do it around 2 or 3 times a day for around 15 minutes. Its a pain in the neck but thats what helped me get rid of my sinisitis.

I only had it once, a few years ago we lived across the road from a huge wattle tree, it had yellow puff flowers and the pollen made my eyes stream and I would sneeze repeatedly whenever I ventured outside.

When I had to go up the street to walk my son to preschool I would be walking for nearly three blocks before the symptoms eased.

Then I had to walk home!

Check your garden and see if there is a shrub out in flower that you may be allergic too and get a friend to prune it.

Your chemist should be able to give you a list of antihistimines that might help, many now are non drowsy so you should be able to function much better and not be trapped indoors.

I was lucky, once the flowering stopped my sympoms went away.

thanks everyone for the replies :) Hopefully fellow sufferers of hayfever can find some relief

I went to the chemist this morning and told them that Telfast wasn't working anymore. They recommend that the tablets used are changed every season as the body gets used to them. I've never been a fan of nasal sprays but after spicearoo suggested one I thought I'd give it a go. I ended up getting Rhinocort the chemist said that it might take a few days to work but for some lucky people it helps straight away..lucky me within a couple of hours I feel great!

nicegreenpetticoats: Jasmine is the plant I can't stand and we have a pretty big tree on our property. I started trying to cut it back (not very cleaver I know! sneezing my head off!) I'm going to get my hubby to get rid of it. What also doesn't help is there is empty block next to ours where grass had gotton to waist height and they mowed it the other day so now is dried out and blowing everywhere :(

Quercetin tablets are what you need.  They are herbal and available by mail from Golden Glow.  Take every hour or so until you get relief, then as per directions daily.  I took them regularly like that for about 18 months, and didn't have any more hay fever for years.  Now I keep some on hand for the occasional 'mild' dose I get, but very rarely need them.   They go out of date before I need them.  good luck.
