The Department of Environment says a dog trained to detect cane toads will be a vital tool in assessing high risk freight entering Western Australia's Kimberley.

Nifty, a belgian malinois, will spend three months in Queensland enhancing its skills and gaining experience in a different environment.

The department's Corinne Everett says the training will take place ahead of the next dry season in Kununurra where Nifty will inspect freight entering WA.

"Certainly next year she's going to be really important inspecting freight coming into Kununurra from high risk areas and then once we have [a] breeding population in Kununurra, she'll be inspecting the freight leaving Kununurra and that freight that's going into Western Australia," she said.
