Folic acid linked to child asthma: study

Women who take folic acid supplements throughout their pregnancy, in an attempt to boost baby's health, are increasing their risk of having a child with asthma, a study has found.

A groundbreaking Australian study, which could explain rising rates of the chronic lung condition, found pregnant women who overuse the supplement were 30 per cent more likely to have a child with asthma.

Taking a folic acid supplement is recommended for women who intend to fall pregnant, as it is known to prevent neural tube defects during a foetus' critical first weeks in the womb.

Associate Professor Michael Davies, from the University of Adelaide's Robinson Institute, has uncovered an "additional and unexpected" consequence for women who also take the supplement throughout their pregnancy.

This idea of taking folic acid came about some years ago, a lady Australian Doctor (can't remember her name) came up with the idea of eating a plate full of Silverbeat 3 times a day, she did not know how it worked, but it worked, it stopped babies being born with Spina Bifida.

So if a pregnant mum is concerned, I suggest you could always go back to eating stacks of Silver Beat.  I don't know if reasearch on asthma was ever done on silverbeat, but it is quite natural and I never heard of Asthma probs from silverbeat.  The only problem is the amount you have to eat.

Thanks ublucky for putting this here.

I didn't take folic acid for my eldest DD, she has asthma.

I took it for my second DD, she doesn't have asthma.

over use the supplement  - THIS WAS WHAT THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT NOT GENERAL USE OF FOLIC ACID IN PREGNANCY.

You should not take more than the recommended amounts - the women were literally taking an overdose of folic acid in the last trimester of their pregnancy NOT the recommended daily allowance.

These studies are getting silly, first one study suggested no tv before the age of 2 , now there saying folic acid
in pregnancy can contribute to asthma.
It is very important for pregnant woman to take folic acid, sometimes before and in the first I think its 3 months of
pregnancy to prevent spina bifita. Also werent they claiming that folate acid is good for brain development and thats
why they were adding it to the bread. So what are they going to say now if you overeat bread , there will be a high increase in asthma in Australia?

I think the media need to do a better job in reporting of studies, like how many people were in the study, did they
have a genetic history of asthma, there needs to be more details than just a tag line- that cause pregnant woman not
to take the supplement.

The problem with folic acid is that it is added to many foods that most people would be unaware of. So, if you are taking supplements you might actually be taking more than you realise. However, it's unlikely that even if you do take a large dose, your body would utilise more than the daily recommended dose. I am quite dubious about this study. Folate has never been known to have any link whatsoever to asthma so I wonder if other variables have been taken into consideration. I actually have mild asthma and I also need to take large doses of folate for a medical condition. It hasn't had any effect on my asthma. I hope this doesn't lead woman to stop taking it in the first trimester.

Well I must be a really bad mother.
I didn't take folic acid before, during or after having any of my 3 children. I just drank lots of water and ate really healthy, home prepared foods. Odd takeout just for variety. Cut out alcohol, tea and coffee. Don't smoke so that wasn't an issue.
My first one was breast fed for 7 weeks then due to feeding problems had to be bottle fed.
Second one was breast fed for 4 weeks then due to feeding problems had to be bottle fed.
Third one was breast fed for 2 days immediately after birth and while I was in hospital and because of the issues with #1 and #2 decided I wouldn't go down the road again and bottle fed.
So according to all the statistics and breastfeeding advocates I'm a really bad mother.
Wonder why it is then that I have perfectly healthy children who hardly ever get sick?!
Hmmm ...
