One
day
Dad

home,
carrying
a
sack.
Something
inside
moved,
and
Billy's
heart
began
to
beat
fast
for
he
thought
it
surely
must
be
a
puppy.

it
wasn't.
When
he
untied
the
string
and
looked
inside,
there,
gazing
up
at
him,
was
a
different
animal
altogether.

a
while
Billy
was
disappointed,
but
soon
he
grew
fond
of
his
pet,
Sam,
and
it
wasn't
long
before
he
proved
a
more
exciting
pet
than could
ever

imagined.
