Mohammed
of
Ghor,
a
Moslem
Turk
ruling
from
Ghazni,
invaded
India
from
the
north-west
The
disunited
Hindu
states,
impeded
from
mobilizing
an
effective
force
by
their
caste
system,
were
easy
prey
for
the
equestrian
Turkish
archers.
In
1192,
the
Indians
were
crushed
at
the
battle
of
Tararori,
and
the
next
year
the
Moslems
captured
Delhi,
which
became
their
capital.
Soon
all
of
north
and
central
India
was
under
islamic
control
The
Delhi
Sultanate
survived
for
more
than
three
centuries,
but
it
lacked
stability.
Four
times
new
dynasties
of
Delhi
violently
cast
off
their
predecessors.
Curiously,
the
presence
of
the
Moslems
in
India
helped
tp
preserve
the
Indian
Culture.
With
the
exception
of
Tamerlane's
brief
sacking
of
Delhi
in
1398-99,
the
Mongols
were
kept
out
of
the
Indian
mainland
by
the
Islamic
conquerors.
The
Indians
learned
to
prosper
under
their
new
rulers.
The
Indian
(Rajput)
culture
blended
with
that
of
the
Moslems,
and
from
the
merger
came
new
art,
literature,
music,
and
architure
which
are
enjoyed
in
India
to
this
day.
Moslem
supremacy
in
Northern
India
brought
changes
in
Indian
coin
design:
pictorial
and
heraldic
devices
were
eliminated,
because

Islamic
religion
forbade
images
on
the
coinage.
