DESPERATE
MAN
BLUES
DISCOVERING
THE
ROOTS
OF
AMERICAN
MUSIC
For
over
50
years,
cultural
scavenger
Joe
Bussard,
the
hero
of
Desperate
Man
Blues,
has
made
it
his
mission
to
rescue
and
to
preserve
what
he
calls
'America's
real
music'.
Music
in
it's
purest
form,
blues,
hillbilly,
bluegrass,
gospel,
jazz
-
undiluted
by
commercialism.
Mostly
produced
in
the
20's
and
30's,
the
records
have
been
gathered
by
Bussard
from
remote
shacks
and
cabins
all
over
th
southern
states
of
America.
Joe
reckons
he
has
driven
more
than
2
million
miles
in
pursuit
of
these
elusive
masterpieces
and
his
huge
collection
of
78rpm
recordings
numbers
over
25,000.
The
many
recordings
from
the
likes
of
Robert
Johnson,
Jimmie
Rodgers,
The
Carter
Family
and
Charley
Patton
are
scratchy,
raw
and
often
haunting.
To
say
that
these
tunes
stand
the
test
of
time
is
an
understatement.
