General
Knowledge
of
Butterflies
Butterflies
from
part
of
the
colossal
order
of
Lepidoptera,
a
captivating
collection
of
over
150,000
known
species.
The
Greek
word
'Lepis'
means
'Scale',
so
Lepidoptera
means
'Scale
Wings'.
Members
of
this
popular
group
live
in
diverse
habitats,
ranging
from
tropical
rainforests
to
cooler
mountain
ranges.
By
the
1740s
the
striking
colours
and
incredible
patterns
on
butterfly
wings
seduced
lots
of
people
into
becoming
collectors.
Indeed,
the
butter-coloured
wings
of
the
brimstone
butterfly
are
thought
to
have
inspired
the
common
name
for
this
part
of
the
order.
Swallowtails
differ
from
all
other
butterflies
in
a
number
of
anatomical
traits.
Most
notably,
their
caterpillars
possess
a
unique
organ
behind
their
heads,
called
the
osmeterium.
Normally
hidden,
this
forked
structure
can
be
everted
when
the
caterpilla
is
threatened,
and
emits
smelly
secretions
containing
terpenes.
The
adults
are
often
tailed
like
the
forked
tail
of
some
swallows,
giving
the
insect
its
name.
