HOW WE ARE GOVERNED is meant for young Australian, not as a critical evaluation of Australia's complex political system but rather as a simple and meaningful explanation of its structure and operation. From a discussion of the purpose of government and its growth in Australia, the passes on to an examination of Parliament and Cabinet, political parties, the public service, local government, the legal system, territories and Australia's place in the world. How a bill is passed by Parliament, how an election is held, and how a criminal trial is conducted are among the questions authoritatively answered. Some of the problems of government are posed for further thought.
