In
late
1964
Decca
released
a
box
set
of
12
LPs
of
Sir
Winston
Churchill's
memoirs
and
speeches
to
mark
his
90th
birthday.
There
are
various
versions
of
this
set
around.
This
one
is
the
ultra-rare
de-luxe
version,
with
a
heavily
embossed
slip
cover
containing
NOT
THE
TWELVE
RECORDS,
but
rather
THREE
(3)
LONG
PLAY
OPEN-REEL
(REEL-TO-REEL)
TAPES
ON
7
INCH
REELS.
The
package
also
contains
a
58
page
booklet,
listing
all
the
tracks,
copiously
illustrated,
and
with
an
appreciation
by
Arthur
Bryant.
The
dimensions
of
the
package
are
340mm
wide,
330mm
high
and
70mm
deep.
The
tapes
come
in
its
original
case
that,
although
initially
designed
to
contain
the
LPs,
was
adapted
by
the
manufacturer
to
hold
the
three
7
inch
reels
of
tapes.
The
issue
of
this
presentation
on
recording
tape
rather
than
in
LP
form
was
so
limited
in
its
production
run
that
the
issuing
company
chose
not
to
change
the
content
listings
in
the
accompanying
booklet
and
so
the
detailed
listing
of
each
of
the
sections
of
the
recordings
is
as
would
be
found
on
the
LP
set.
Nevertheless
the
continuity
of
the
recording
is
not
dramatically
altered.
The
tape
set
is
in
very
good
condition
throughout.
The
outer
packaging
shows
normal
signs
of
wear
as
does
the
booklet
which
is
complete.
The
booklet
has
been
restapled
and
has
been
secured
by
book-binding
tape.
Although
dominated
with
Churchill's
recording
of
his
memoirs,
also
included
are
some
of
the
classic
speeches
you
would
expect
hear.
For
instance,
speeches
from
June
18,
1940
("Their
Finest
Hour"),
September
17,
1940
("Give
us
the
tools
and
we
will
finish
the
job"),
and
November
7,
1941
("I
have
never
given
any
assurance
of
a
speedy
or
easy
or
cheap
victory").
The
tapes
are
in
very
good
condition,
playing
well,
without
any
noticeable
hiss,
pops
or
crackle
that
could
occur
in
the
LP
set
(specially
if
they
have
been
replayed
many
times).
Of
interest
to
audiophiles
is
the
fact
that
these
tapes
are
the
only
ones
that,
to
my
knowledge,
contain
a
tape
identification
message
imbeded
on
the
actual
recording
tape.
That
is,
when
a
reel
of
one
of
the
tapes
is
wound
forward
at
reel
take-up
speed
(ie.
fast-forwarding),
as
the
tape
passes
over
the
playback
heads
a
faint
phrase
continually
repeats
itself.
The
repeated
phrase
is
"a
London
tape".
I
have
never
found
this
feature
on
any
of
the
other
London
brand
tapes
I
possess.
This
phrase,
of
course,
is
not
present
when
the
tapes
are
listened
to
at
normal
speed.
The
set
would
make
a
marvellous
addition
to
your
collection
if
you
are
an
admirer
of
the
great
Englishman,
or
a
superb
gift
for
someone
you
know
who
reveres
his
memory.
While
almost
everyone
knows
a
few
of
the
more
famous
Churchill
quotes,
hearing
them
in
the
context
of
the
speeches
in
which
they
were
made
is
a
most
enlightening
experience.
When
this
reel-to-reel
tape
set
can
be
found
in
the
lists
of
second-hand
sellers
of
specialist
books
and
records
it
commands
a
price
far
higher
that
offered
here.
