Selling Postage Stamps

Australian postage stamps are produced with an adhesive backing that allows them to be attached to a letter and parcel article once only.

Used and 'washed' Australia Post postage stamps must not be offered for sale, with the obvious intention that they will be re-used to obtain further postal services.

Postage stamps which are taken from delivered postal articles, and which have been 'washed', or treated, to remove evidence of the cancellation of postage and then offered for sale as "uncancelled stamps", capable of being used to procure postal services without further payment, provided the purchaser "applies gum" MUST NOT be listed on OZtion.

Under section 471.5 of the Criminal Code Act (1995) (Commonwealth) it is provided that:

"A person is guilty of an offence if the person dishonestly uses for postal services a postage stamp

- that has been previously used for postal services, or

- that has been obliterated, or

- that has been defaced."

The maximum penalty for a breach of this section is set at 'Imprisonment for 12 months"
