Australian
postage
stamps
are
produced
with
an
adhesive
backing
that
allows
them
to
be
attached
to
a
letter
and
parcel
article
once
only.
Used
and
'washed'
Australia
Post
postage
stamps
must
not
be
offered
for
sale,
with
the
obvious
intention
that
they
will
be
re-used
to
obtain
further
postal
services.
Postage
stamps
which
are
taken
from
delivered
postal
articles,
and
which
have
been
'washed',
or
treated,
to
remove
evidence
of
the
cancellation
of
postage
and
then
offered
for
sale
as
"uncancelled
stamps",
capable
of
being
used
to
procure
postal
services
without
further
payment,
provided
the
purchaser
"applies
gum"
MUST
NOT
be
listed
on
OZtion.
Under
section
471.5
of
the
Criminal
Code
Act
(1995)
(Commonwealth)
it
is
provided
that:
"A
person
is
guilty
of
an
offence
if
the
person
dishonestly
uses
for
postal
services
a
postage
stamp
-
that
has
been
previously
used
for
postal
services,
or
-
that
has
been
obliterated,
or
-
that
has
been
defaced."
The
maximum
penalty
for
a
breach
of
this
section
is
set
at
'Imprisonment
for
12
months"
