Ray Hack got lost on a misty day in the mountains. There was nothing new in that but it was remarkable that three enemies suddenly appeared in his path at a place about as far off the beaten track as you could get. To even up a grudge the bad threesome sent Hack over a precipice.
He should have died there and then but luck was on his side and amazingly he survived. Trapper Sprite found him beside the trail and took him to Catlow town. There he received medical help from Mildred West and also learned the harrowing story of a little boy who was being held hostage for the lives of two murderers.
Hack began to suspect that there might be more to his earlier encounter in the mountains than he had first thought. Could his three would-be killers have, in reality, been protecting a secret on Hunter's Ridge. If so, what could that secret have been?
