The laces are threaded through the eyelets of the shoes (like ordinary laces), but once in place, after shoes are on, just pull to the desired pressure and release. 

You only have to thread them ONCE!! - then never again!

I have been using a pair in my walking shoes for some time now, and had to order some more for my other shoes!  I find them to be very useful.

My shoes don't come untied anymore, and I don't have to spend time crouched down, doing them up in the morning, or undoing them in the evening.
