Description
from
the
foreword
of
the
book
Could
you
send
me
a
list
of
plays
suitable
for
a
group
of
...er
say,
12-14
year
olds I
need
a
good
example
of
a
radio
play Where
can
I
get
TV
scripts My
class
wants
to
do
a
play
-
fifteen
girls,
nineteen
boys
-
any
suggestions?
These
are
trypical
requests
made
by
teachers.
Whether
through
their
own
planning,
or
from
student
prompting
or
from
whatever
influence,
teachers
seek
out
suitable
plays
for
their
classes. It
seems
to
be
a
continuing
concern,
yet
it
has
become
quite
fashionable
for
some
educationists
to
speak
out
strongly
against
the
use
of
the
scripted
play
in
school
drama
programmes.
Much
is
being
written
on
the
nature
and
purpose
of
drama
in
the
educational
process.
There
is
a
growning
aceptance
that
the
clasroom
drama
programme
should
involve
teachers
and
students
in
much
more
than
the
developemnt
of
theatre
skills
-
it
should
be
concerned
primarily
with
the
personal
and
social
development
of
each
individual.
For
too
long
"the
play"
has
been
"the
thing"
in
the
minds
of
too
many
well-meaning
teachers
of
drama.
However,
(taking
liberties
with
Shakespeare
again)
"the
fault,
dear
friends,
lies
not
in
the
play
but
in
ourselves". The
scripted
play
is
an
extremely
valuable
tool.
LIke
most
tools,
the
value
of
the
play
lies
in
the
use.
Too
often
"doing
a
play"
as
meant
little
more
than
learning
the
lines
and
mastering
the
moves.
Much
creative,
improvisational
work
and
lively
discussion
can
be
experience
in
exploring
relationships
suggested
in
these
scripts
-
relations
of
person
to
others,
of
person
to
environment,
of
person
to
inner
self.
Opportunities
for
small-group
activities
abound
here.
Well
used,
the
scripted
play
can
assist
that
personal,
social
and
aesthetic
awareness
we
strive
to
develop
in
our
students.
The
authors
have
supplied
the
tools
-
the
use
is
up
to
us.
Enjoyment
should
be
a
keynote.
Enjoy
yourselves
firs
and,
when
the
occasion
arises,
"Bring
the
House
Down"!
