Boutique
Numismatique
is
a
shop
designed
for
fellow-collectors
to
purchase
affordable
coins
and
the
occasional
bank-note.
|
| The
history
of
the
'Pillar
Dollar' |
|
During
1732-1772,
the
Spanish
minted
8
reales
coins
in
the
New
World
at
such
mints
as
Mexico
City,
Guatemala,
Santa
Fe
de
Bogotá,
Popayán,
Lima,
Potosí,
and
Santiago.
The
distinctive
design
features
on
the
obverse
two
pillars,
each
with
a
crown
and
wrapped
with
a
banner
bearing
the
words
PLUS
VLTR.
Between
the
two
pillars
are
two
worlds
sitting
on
an
ocean
of
water.
The
reverse
features
a
heraldic
shield
capped
with
a
crown.
These
coins
circulated
throughout
the
New
World
where
they
were
accepted
as
legal
tender,
even
in
Australia
(a
'Proclamation'
coin).
Although
sometimes
referred
to
as
Spanish
Milled
Dollars,
Pillar
Dollars,
or
Pieces
of
Eight,
the
technically
correct
term
is
columnarios.

| Proclamation
Coins |
|
Due
to
a
general
shortage
of
coins
in
colonial
New
South
Wales,
Governor
Gidley
issued
a
proclamation
in
1800.
The
proclamation
set
out
the
values
of
various
recognised
currencies
in
the
colony.
The
currencies,
included
Portugese,
Dutch,
Spanish
and
English
coins.
One
English
coin
recognised
was
the
'cartwheel'
copper
penny
which
weighed
1
ounce.
The
banner
for
my
shop
contains
an
image
of
a
cartwheel
penny.
A
lot
of
coin
collectors
consider
the
Proclamation
coins
as
the
first
